A B.E. or B.Tech degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering from a recognized university is required. Equivalent qualifications such as Sections A and B of the Institution of Engineers (India) examination are also accepted. Final year students may apply provisionally.
Civil, Mechanical, Electrical ya Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering mein kisi recognized university se B.E. ya B.Tech degree chahiye. Institution of Engineers (India) ke Sections A aur B jaisi equivalent qualifications bhi accepted hain. Final year students provisionally apply kar sakte hain.

The UPSC ESE selection happens in three stages. Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit. Only Mains (600 marks) and Personality Test (200 marks) together determine the final rank.

Important: Mains papers are conventional (descriptive) type — not objective. Both papers are discipline-specific. Candidates must write detailed answers with diagrams, derivations, and technical explanations. There is no negative marking in Mains.
