RRB ALP Preparation Strategy 2026: CBT-1, CBT-2 & CBAT Guide
RRB ALP preparation is not one syllabus. It is three different performance problems. CBT-1 tests broad screening speed. CBT-2 Part-A is the competitive scoring paper. CBT-2 Part-B is a qualifying trade test. Candidates who clear those stages then face CBAT, where each test battery must be qualified separately. A useful preparation plan therefore changes emphasis as the recruitment progresses.

RRB ALP CEN 01/2026: Know the Stage Logic Before You Study
The official CEN 01/2026 states that CBT-1 is a screening exam. It contains 75 questions in 60 minutes, carries one mark per question and applies one-third negative marking for each wrong answer. The notified syllabus covers Mathematics, Mental Ability and General Science. Because CBT-1 marks are not used to prepare the final panel, the goal is efficient qualification and shortlisting rather than reckless over-attempting.

CBT-1 Strategy: Clear the Screen Without Burning Time
With 75 questions in 60 minutes, candidates have less than one minute per question on average. Start by making Mathematics and Mental Ability your speed anchors. Use General Science as a high-return revision subject because the CEN limits it to Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences at roughly Class-10 level.
CBT-2 Part-A: Shift From Breadth to Technical Depth
Part-A contains Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and Basic Science & Engineering. The official broad engineering topics include engineering drawing, units and measurements, mass/weight/density, work-power-energy, speed/velocity, heat, basic electricity, simple machines, safety, environment and IT literacy. Build this as a structured technical notebook instead of scattered factual notes.
A practical sequence is: first repair arithmetic and reasoning speed, then build Basic Science & Engineering in topic clusters, then move to 90-minute Part-A mocks. Every mock should produce a list of concept errors, calculation errors and time-management errors.
CBT-2 Part-B: Treat the Trade Test as a Qualification Gate
Part-B is qualifying, but that does not mean it is unimportant. The official ALP CEN requires 35% in Part-B irrespective of category, and Part-A marks are considered for later shortlisting only when Part-B is qualified. Candidates should use the trade syllabus linked through the Directorate General of Training and prepare from the exact eligible trade mapped to their qualification.
Do not mix trade theory into the Part-A plan. Keep a separate Part-B notebook containing trade definitions, tools, safety procedures, processes, diagrams and common calculations from the notified trade syllabus.
CBAT: Start Familiarisation Before You Need It
The ALP aptitude stage is different from a conventional knowledge test. The official scheme requires candidates to qualify each test battery separately, with a minimum T-score of 42 in each battery, and there is no negative marking. The final merit framework gives 50% weight to CBT-2 Part-A and 50% to CBAT (a 50:50 ratio) among candidates who qualify the aptitude stage.
The correct preparation method is familiarisation and repeated timed practice, not memorising ‘questions’. Use only official RDSO candidate guidance for the nature of aptitude batteries. Do not publish copied commercial psychometric tests as if they were official.

Full-Time vs Working Candidate Pathways
Full-time candidates can use one technical block, one Mathematics/Reasoning block and one shorter Science block each day. Working candidates should prioritise 60–75 minutes of technical study, 45 minutes of Mathematics/Reasoning and a 20–30 minute revision block on weekdays, with mock tests and Part-B trade revision on weekends.
Negative Marking and Attempt Discipline
Both CBT-1 and CBT-2 carry one-third negative marking. The correct response is not to become over-cautious; it is to distinguish knowledge gaps from time pressure. Attempt direct questions first, mark longer solvable questions for a second pass, and avoid pure guesses. Track how many marks are lost through wrong low-confidence attempts in every mock.
Why We Are Not Publishing a Fake ALP ‘Safe Score’
Cut-offs depend on the specific CEN, RRB, category, stage and normalization. A single future safe score would be an unsupported prediction. Use official historical cut-offs only as context after matching the same stage and recruitment cycle. The preparation target should be rising mock accuracy, full-syllabus coverage and consistent completion within the notified time.

- Day 2: Mental Ability mixed set; General Science revision.
- Day 3: Basic Science & Engineering cluster.
