Quick answer: SSC JE 2026 does not have one universal qualification for all 1,699 tentative vacancies. Eligibility depends on the post, engineering discipline and recruiting department. A degree is sufficient for some posts, a three-year diploma is accepted for many others, while certain diploma routes also require two or three years of relevant experience.

Who can apply for SSC JE 2026?

The examination covers Junior Engineer posts in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electrical & Mechanical and Telecom disciplines. It also includes Scientific Assistant recruitment for the India Meteorological Department.

Post / Department Key Qualification Rule
BRO - JE Civil Civil Engineering degree, or a three-year Civil Engineering diploma with two years of relevant work experience.
BRO - JE Electrical & Mechanical Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree, or an eligible three-year diploma with two years of relevant experience.
CPWD - JE Civil / Electrical Relevant engineering diploma from a recognized university or institute.
Central Water Commission Bachelor's degree or diploma in the relevant Civil or Mechanical Engineering discipline.
Military Engineer Services Relevant engineering degree, or a three-year diploma plus two years of relevant experience.
DGQA-NAVAL Relevant engineering degree, or applicable three-year diploma plus two years of relevant experience.
Director General of Lighthouses & Lightships Relevant degree, or diploma with three years of experience, or an equivalent qualification as specified by SSC.
Department of Telecommunications - JE Telecom Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Technology in an eligible discipline such as Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Telecommunications, IT or Instrumentation.
India Meteorological Department - Scientific Assistant Bachelor's Degree in Science with Physics, or an eligible degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Communication, IT, Telecommunication, Instrumentation or related specified fields.

A diploma does not mean the same thing for every post

This is one of the most important details in the SSC JE 2026 notice. Some departments accept a diploma by itself, while others require relevant work experience after completion of the diploma. Internship, training or research completed while acquiring the qualification does not automatically count as the required professional experience.

Age limit

SSC will calculate age as on 01 August 2026. Depending on the post, the upper age limit is either 30 years or 32 years.

Post Age Limit Eligible Date-of-Birth Range
Up to 30 years 02 August 1996 to 01 August 2008
Up to 32 years 02 August 1994 to 01 August 2008

Major age relaxations

  • SC/ST: 5 years
  • OBC: 3 years
  • PwBD - UR/EWS: 10 years
  • PwBD - OBC: 13 years
  • PwBD - SC/ST: 15 years
  • Ex-Servicemen: 3 years after deduction of eligible military service from actual age

Special rule for BRO

Only male candidates are eligible for the Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organisation. BRO posts also carry specific physical, medical and physical-efficiency requirements. Candidates interested in BRO should check these standards before giving the organization a high preference because SSC may not reallocate a candidate if the candidate later fails BRO's prescribed standards.

Candidate note: Do not decide eligibility only from the words “degree or diploma.” Match your exact discipline, department and required experience against the official notification before submitting the form.

What does “tentative vacancy” mean?

The October vacancy list is tentative. The figure of 1,699 is not final, can change before final selection, and does not promise any individual post allocation.

SSC also states that it does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancy figures for this examination. Candidates should not rely on unofficial state-wise SSC JE 2026 vacancy tables unless they are supported by the relevant user department.

SSC JE 2026 application fee is ₹100.

Category Application Fee

Women candidates ₹0 - Exempt

The application closed on 22 September 2026 at 11:00 PM, and online fee payment closed on 23 September 2026 at 11:00 PM.

SSC accepts online payment through supported methods including BHIM UPI, Net Banking and eligible debit cards. Candidates who are required to pay should check the payment status after completing the transaction. An application can remain incomplete if the fee is not successfully received by SSC.

Important: The application deadline and fee-payment deadline are different. Submitting the form by 22 September does not extend the application itself to 23 September.

SSC JE 2026 selection has two Computer Based Examination papers. Paper-I is qualifying. Candidates shortlisted from Paper-I move to Paper-II, and final merit is determined using the normalized Paper-II score together with post and organization preferences and fulfilment of eligibility conditions.

SSC JE 2026 Paper-I

Section Questions Marks
General Intelligence & Reasoning 50 50
General Awareness 50 50
Relevant Engineering / Technical Subject 100 100
Total 200 200

Duration: 2 hours, with additional time for eligible scribe candidates as prescribed by SSC.

SSC JE 2026 Paper-II

Paper Questions Marks Duration
Relevant Engineering / Technical Subject 100 300 2 Hours

Minimum qualifying marks

  • UR: 30%
  • OBC/EWS: 25%
  • Other categories: 20%

How final selection works

Paper-I is used to shortlist candidates for Paper-II. SSC prepares separate merit lists for Junior Engineer Civil, Junior Engineer Electrical & Mechanical, Junior Engineer Telecom and Scientific Assistant in IMD. Final selection and allocation are based primarily on Paper-II performance and the candidate's post/organization preference, subject to meeting every post-specific requirement.

Candidate impact: Post preference is not a casual choice. A candidate who receives a preferred post but later fails that post's medical, physical, educational or other prescribed requirement may lose candidature rather than automatically receiving another preference.

SSC JE 2026 tests common aptitude and awareness in Paper-I together with the technical discipline selected by the candidate. Paper-II is focused on the relevant engineering or technical subject.

Paper-I syllabus structure

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning - 50 questions / 50 marks
  • General Awareness - 50 questions / 50 marks
  • Relevant Engineering or Technical Subject - 100 questions / 100 marks

Technical subject options

  • Part-A: General Engineering - Civil & Structural
  • Part-B: General Engineering - Electrical
  • Part-C: General Engineering - Mechanical
  • Part-D: Computer Science & Information Technology for eligible Scientific Assistant candidates
  • Part-E: Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering for eligible Scientific Assistant candidates
  • Part-F: Physics for eligible Scientific Assistant candidates
  • Part-G: Telecommunication for Junior Engineer Telecom

Paper-II

Paper-II contains 100 objective questions carrying 300 marks in the relevant technical subject selected according to the candidate's educational qualification and application choice.

Negative marking

  • Paper-I: 0.25 mark deducted for each incorrect answer.
  • Paper-II: 1 mark deducted for each incorrect answer.

Important 2026 exam-detail candidates may miss

The subject or stream selected in the online application cannot be changed later. Candidates should therefore verify their educational qualification and technical-paper choice before final submission.

SSC also states that a scientific calculator will be available on the computer screen during the examination. Where required, the relevant IS 456:2000 Code of Practice table and Steam Table will also be available through the examination console. Physical calculators or physical copies of those tables are not permitted inside the exam lab.
