Who could apply
SSC accepts several qualifying combinations. Broadly, a candidate needs a Master's degree in one of Hindi or English with the other language studied as a compulsory or elective subject at degree level — or a Master's in any subject with both Hindi and English as compulsory or elective subjects at degree level.

Age: 18 to 30 years as on 1 August 2026 (born not before 2 August 1996 and not later than 1 August 2008). Standard relaxations apply: 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, 10 years for PwBD, and the bands prescribed for ex-servicemen.
Age is reckoned against the cut-off date in the notification, not your application or exam date.

The seats are spread across roughly 32 central government ministries, departments and subordinate offices, with the ministry-wise breakdown published in SSC's revised vacancy notice.
Read the revision, not the notification: the April notification's 84 posts were explicitly tentative. SSC collects indents from participating ministries after the notification goes out, which is why the final figure landed at 303 in July. Any page still quoting 84 is working from a superseded document.
Selection Process

- Negative marking: 0.25 marks per wrong answer
- Sectional timing is enforced — one hour for Hindi and one hour for English, with no carry-over of unused time between them
- Paper I tests grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and correct usage in both languages
Paper II — Translation and Essay
Paper II is descriptive: one passage for translation from Hindi to English, one from English to Hindi, and an essay each in Hindi and English — 200 marks in two hours. For final merit, SSC counts 50% of the Paper I score and 100% of the Paper II marks, and there may be separate category-wise cut-offs in each paper. Paper II carries more weight, but Paper I still counts.

- Tentative answer keys and response sheets were posted in the SSC candidate login on 21 September 2026.

Why the vacancy update matters to you
The April notification listed 84 tentative vacancies. SSC’s tentative vacancy list as on 9 July 2026 shows 303. If you wrote off this exam in May on the basis of 84 seats, that calculation no longer holds.
