RRB Group D Preparation Strategy: CBT + PET Guide for Level-1
RRB Group D preparation has two different jobs: score well enough in the CBT to reach the next stage, and be physically ready for a qualifying PET if the post/candidate category requires it. Candidates who postpone all physical preparation until after the CBT risk creating unnecessary pressure, while candidates who over-train early can lose study time or get injured. The practical plan is to build academic preparation and gradual fitness in parallel.

Current reference cycle: RRB Level-1 (Group D) — CEN No. 09/2025, published 31 January 2026.
Current official status: RRB’s notice dated 7 September 2026 says the CBT was held from 3 to 25 August 2026. Candidates can view their questions, responses and answer keys and raise objections until 17 September 2026 (23:55 hrs). No PET date had been announced when this guide was verified. If you appeared in this CBT, focus now on the PET standards and PET-readiness plan below.

RRB Level-1 CBT Pattern: Build Around the Official Weighting
CEN 09/2025 specifies a 90-minute CBT with 100 one-mark questions. The indicative distribution is 25 General Science, 25 Mathematics, 30 General Intelligence & Reasoning, and 20 General Awareness & Current Affairs. One-third mark is deducted for each wrong answer. The section split is indicative, so candidates should cover the full notified syllabus rather than using a coaching-source weightage as a fixed promise.
| Subject | Indicative questions | Preparation emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 30 | Daily timed practice; pattern recognition; data interpretation/sufficiency; decision-making. |
| General Science | 25 | Class-10 Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences; concept + MCQ revision. |
| Mathematics | 25 | Arithmetic first, then algebra/geometry/mensuration/statistics and speed work. |
| General Awareness & Current Affairs | 20 | Compact static-GK + recurring current-affairs recall. |
Mathematics: Build Speed Before Difficult Variety
The official syllabus includes number system, BODMAS, fractions, LCM/HCF, ratio, percentages, mensuration, time-work, time-distance, interest, profit-loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, square roots, age calculations, calendar-clock and pipes-cisterns. Candidates should first become fast and reliable in high-frequency arithmetic operations, then add the geometry/algebra layer.
Reasoning: Use It as a Daily Scoring Subject
Reasoning has the largest indicative question share. Use 20–30 minute mixed sets nearly every day: series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, Venn diagrams, data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions, decision-making, classification, directions and statement-based questions. A mixed set is more useful than memorising one pattern for hours because the CBT forces frequent mental switching.
General Science: Stay at the Notified Level
The CEN defines General Science around Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences at Class-10 level. That is a useful boundary. Avoid spending large blocks on advanced science that is outside the notified level. Build one-page chapter summaries, then test recall with short MCQ sets.
PET Standards: Know the Target, Then Train Gradually
The official CEN 09/2025 states that the PET is qualifying. Male candidates are required to carry 35 kg for 100 metres in two minutes in one chance without putting the weight down, and run 1,000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds in one chance. Female candidates are required to carry 20 kg for 100 metres in two minutes in one chance and run 1,000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds in one chance.
Safety note: This article should not prescribe extreme training, crash weight loss, supplements, pain-masking medication or unsafe load practice. Candidates should increase running and carrying work gradually according to their current fitness and should seek qualified medical/fitness advice when they have a health condition, injury, pregnancy-related question or uncertainty about safe exertion.
The official CEN also contains important exemptions and special provisions. It states that specified PwBD candidates are exempt from PET; Course Completed Act Apprentices and Ex-Servicemen are also exempt from PET under the stated rules. It further specifies female-candidate pregnancy procedures and applies female PET standards to transgender candidates. Claude should summarise these only with a direct official-source link, because eligibility depends on the exact CEN wording.
A 90-Day CBT + PET Preparation Roadmap
| Phase | Days | Academic priority | PET readiness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 1–30 | Arithmetic + reasoning fundamentals; Class-10 science; static/current GA system | Comfortable walk/run base; basic mobility and strength; no maximal load attempts. |
| Integration | 31–60 | Timed mixed sets; weekly CBT; error-log repair | Progressive running intervals and supervised/controlled carry practice appropriate to fitness. |
| Simulation | 61–90 | 2–3 full CBTs weekly; negative-marking discipline; final revision | Practise toward official distance/time standards with recovery days; avoid last-minute overtraining. |
If the CBT date is announced with less time, compress the academic phases but keep the physical progression conservative. Fitness gains cannot be safely rushed in the same way that a revision schedule can.
Negative Marking: Protect the Score You Already Earned
A one-third penalty makes careless guessing expensive. Complete high-confidence questions first, then return to moderate-confidence questions. During mock analysis, record how many marks were lost through concept gaps versus rushed reading versus low-confidence guessing. The goal is not simply more attempts; it is more net marks.
Full-Time vs Working Candidate Pathways
Full-time candidates can rotate two academic blocks plus a short current-affairs revision, with fitness on alternate days according to recovery. Working candidates should use compact weekday academic sessions and reserve longer mock/PET sessions for weekends, but avoid stacking a hard running session immediately before a long mock if fatigue damages study quality.
Why We Are Not Publishing an Expected Cut-Off as Fact
RRB cut-offs are published in recruitment context and can vary by RRB/category/stage. The site should not manufacture a future ‘safe score’. Use verified historical cut-offs only when the same stage and context are clearly labelled, and keep the current preparation recommendation focused on accuracy, completion and PET qualification.
7-Day Combined Revision Loop
- Day 1: Mathematics + easy aerobic session or mobility.
- Day 2: Reasoning mixed set + General Science revision.
- Day 3: Mathematics repair + progressive run/walk or fitness session.
- Day 4: General Science + Current Affairs recall.
- Day 5: 60-minute mixed CBT + error analysis; keep physical work light.
- Day 6: Weak-topic repair + controlled strength/carry technique appropriate to current fitness.
- Day 7: Full 90-minute CBT simulation; recovery-focused physical day.
RRB Group D / Level-1 FAQs
The official CEN specifies 100 questions in 90 minutes with one-third negative marking.
General Intelligence & Reasoning has an indicative 30 questions; General Science and Mathematics have 25 each, and General Awareness/Current Affairs 20.
CEN 09/2025 describes PET as mandatory and qualifying for candidates to whom it applies.
The CEN states 35 kg carried for 100 metres in 2 minutes in one chance, plus 1,000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds in one chance.
The CEN states 20 kg carried for 100 metres in 2 minutes in one chance, plus 1,000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds in one chance.
The CEN lists exemptions/special provisions including specified PwBD candidates, Course Completed Act Apprentices and Ex-Servicemen. Check the exact current CEN text for applicability.
Build a gradual fitness base while preparing for the CBT rather than waiting for the result. Avoid unsafe last-minute maximal training.
