Who can apply?
| Requirement | What SSC asks for |
|---|---|
| Education | Passed Class 10 (Matriculation) from a recognised board. No graduation required, and no percentage cut-off. |
| Age (UR) | 18 to 23 years as on the cut-off date given in the notification |
| Nationality | Citizen of India |
| Gender | Male and female candidates are both eligible; separate physical standards apply |
Age relaxation β upper limit by category
| Category | Relaxation | Effective upper age |
|---|---|---|
| OBC (non-creamy layer) | +3 years | 26 years |
| SC / ST | +5 years | 28 years |
| Ex-servicemen | As per rules | Per notification |
Physical Standards (PST)
| Standard | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Height (Gen / OBC / SC) | 170 cm | 157 cm |
| Chest (unexpanded β expanded) | 80 cm β 85 cm (5 cm expansion is mandatory) | Not applicable |
Relaxed height and chest standards apply for ST candidates and for candidates from specified hill and north-eastern regions β the exact relaxation table is printed in the notification and differs by force.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
- Male: 5 km race in 24 minutes
- Female: 1.6 km race in 8Β½ minutes
- Separate, longer timings apply for candidates from Ladakh region
The PET is qualifying only β it earns you no marks, but failing it ends your candidature regardless of your CBE score.
Selection Process & Exam Pattern
- Computer Based Examination (CBE) β the only stage that produces marks
- Physical Efficiency Test & Physical Standard Test (PET/PST) β qualifying
- Detailed Medical Examination (DME) β qualifying
- Document Verification and final merit
CBE pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 20 | 40 |
| General Knowledge & General Awareness | 20 | 40 |
| Elementary Mathematics | 20 | 40 |
| English / Hindi | 20 | 40 |
| Total | 80 | 160 |
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Each question: 2 marks
- Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer; nothing deducted for a blank
- Level: Matriculation standard throughout
- Language: the paper is offered in Hindi, English and several regional languages
The arithmetic that matters: 80 questions in 60 minutes is 45 seconds per question, and a wrong answer costs you 2.25 marks relative to a correct one. On a paper this tight, disciplined skipping outscores guessing.
Getting ready before the form opens
SSC applications run through a One Time Registration (OTR) profile. You cannot fill the GD form without one, and details pulled from OTR into the form cannot all be edited later β so the profile is the thing to fix in September.
- Create or open your SSC OTR account on ssc.gov.in. If you registered for an earlier SSC exam, log in and review it rather than making a second account β duplicate OTRs cause rejections.
- Match your name, father's name and date of birth to your Class 10 certificate, character for character. This is the single most common cause of rejection at document verification.
- Update your photograph if it is more than three months old. SSC rejects outdated or non-compliant photographs at the exam centre.
- Keep your category certificate current. OBC non-creamy-layer certificates have a validity period; an expired one at DV is treated as no certificate.
- When the notification drops, read the force-wise physical standards first, then choose your force preferences β not the other way round.
- Apply in the first week of the window. The SSC portal slows badly in the final 48 hours of every cycle.
Documents to have scanned and ready
- Class 10 marksheet and certificate (also your date-of-birth proof)
- Recent passport-size photograph in the format SSC specifies in the notification
- Signature
- Category certificate (SC / ST / OBC / EWS) in the prescribed central-government format
- Domicile certificate, if you are claiming a region-based height or chest relaxation
- NCC certificate, if you are claiming bonus marks

What to do in the four weeks before the form opens
The SSC GD form window is short and the portal is congested on the last two days, so the work that actually decides whether you get through is done now, not in October. Two things block more candidates than the exam does: an SSC OTR (One Time Registration) profile that does not match their Class 10 certificate, and a physical standard they discover they miss only at the PET/PST stage. Both are fixable in September β neither is fixable in November.
Official sources β use only these
- Staff Selection Commission Official Website (ssc.gov.in) β the notification PDF and the Annual Calendar are published here first.
- SSC One Time Registration Portal (ssc.gov.in) β complete or correct your OTR profile now, before the form opens.
No vacancy figure, application link or exam date for the 2027 cycle is official until it appears on ssc.gov.in. Treat every number circulating before then, including on this page, as an expectation and not a fact.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. As on 1 September 2026 it has not been released. The SSC Annual Calendar 2026-27 schedules it for September 2026, with applications closing in October 2026. Any website already showing an "SSC GD 2027 apply online" link is not using an official source.
SSC has not announced the figure, and it is not in the Annual Calendar β the calendar only fixes dates. The seat count is published inside the notification PDF itself, force by force. We will not print an expected number here because past cycles have swung from roughly 25,000 to over 50,000 seats.
Neither. SSC GD needs only Class 10, so a higher qualification gives you no advantage in eligibility or marks. What matters is your age on the cut-off date and your physical standards.
It depends entirely on the cut-off date printed in the notification, not on the date you apply. SSC fixes a specific reference date, and your age is calculated on that date alone. Check it in the PDF before assuming you have aged out.
Set preferences by physical standard first. Height and chest requirements differ between forces, and candidates routinely clear the CBE and then fail PST for a force they had no realistic chance in. Read the force-wise standards table in the notification before ranking your choices.
Yes β 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer, while each correct answer earns 2 marks. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.
Only inside the correction window SSC opens after the application deadline, and SSC charges a correction fee. The number of corrections allowed is limited, and some fields are never editable β which is why the OTR profile has to be right first.
